What to Look for When Choosing a Medical Spa

The Importance of Qualified Medical Providers for Cosmetic Treatments

One of the primary reasons we opened CosmeticsMD was to ensure patients received cosmetic treatments from qualified medical providers in a safe, controlled environment overseen by dermatology experts. As both a board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon, I have extensive training and experience in identifying and treating skin conditions and performing complex surgical procedures.

In the increasingly popular world of cosmetic treatments and medical aesthetics, it's crucial to be an educated consumer. Not all medical spas are created equal, and the expertise of the providers can vastly impact your safety and results. When entrusting your appearance to a medspa, here are some critical factors to consider:

Qualifications of the Providers

Don't settle for anything less than professionals with extensive training and oversight from qualified physicians. At CosmeticsMD, all treatments are performed by:

  • Board-certified dermatologists - you can’t find a more qualified group of people who know about skin concerns!

  • Highly trained physician assistants, nurse practitioners specializing in both medical and cosmetic dermatology, and a CANS certified registered nurse

  • Experienced Licensed medical aestheticians under dermatologist supervision

Our providers have the knowledge to properly screen patients, ensuring treatments are appropriate based on individual medical histories and conditions.

Adherence to Safety Protocols

Your well-being should be the top priority. Look for a medspa that follows rigorous safety standards, such as:

  • Using only medical-grade products

  • Sterilizing equipment and utilizing single-use needles

  • Referring any suspicious skin lesions for further evaluation

  • Asking the right medical history questions, such as whether patients have metal in their bodies or autoimmune conditions which could impact certain treatments

Many non-physician-led spas may lack the expertise to identify potential complications or implement proper protocols.

Customized Treatment Plans

Beware of a one-size-fits-all approach. Your medspa should take the time to carefully evaluate your unique skin and goals, recommending the most effective treatment plan tailored to your needs – even if it means steering you away from that trendy procedure. For instance, while Botox is excellent for reducing dynamic wrinkles, dermal fillers may be better for restoring volume, and RF Microneedling can improve skin texture and firmness.

Medical Oversight and Support

What happens if something goes wrong? Choose a medspa with on-site physicians who can properly identify and address any complications from cosmetic treatments. At CosmeticsMD, our dermatologists are available daily to resolve issues that may arise.

Thorough Pre- and Post-Treatment Guidance

For optimal results, a reputable medspa should provide detailed instructions for pre-treatment preparation and post-treatment care, as well as schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress.

While budget is certainly a consideration, compromising on quality, expertise and safety could lead to unsatisfactory results or long-term consequences. When it comes to your appearance, choosing a qualified medical spa is important. You deserve the expertise and commitment to excellence that only a qualified, medically-supervised facility like CosmeticsMD can provide.
